Floors are all walkable surfaces in a building, and ceilings are all surfaces above us.

When considering the thermal insulation of floors and ceilings, we must take into account  their position and intended use.

We must take into account the transmittance of sound through floors and ceilings, and identify the wall's cold and heated side. All of the above determines the appropriate sequence of layers to ensure a balanced moisture transmission. This is all the more important in heated spaces that border either on cold spaces or the surrounding, as well as in permanently cooled spaces (cooling units), where temperature must be kept constantly low.

SOLUTIONS

Basically, floors are divided into slabs on grade, industrial floors and floors above unheated spaces, while ceilings are divided into mezzanines and ceilings below unheated spaces.

Slab on grade is executed with strip and point foundations. Nevertheless, we should always consider installing thermal insulation.

As they must withstand permanent heavy loads, industrial floors require thermal insulation with a higher compressive strength which is calculated with regard to the intended loads.
